An Active Mind

An active mind is something that is appreciated across all walks of life. This is nowhere more obvious than in Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) rehabilitation. It is highly valued as a good predictor of outcome. The promotion of an active mind is sought here as well as in other fields. I have had the unique experience of having an active mind both prior to my ABI and then again after. Being able to recall situations while retaining the skills to analyze and remember how the events leading to these situations transpired has been a real gift.

Success & Resilience

Success…

How do you define success?

All of a sudden you have been thrust into this whole new world of brain injury…

And you wonder a lot…

At first everyone says you should be happy to be having breakfast…
but this delight soon fades.

Then it is to return to work…
as if all everybody wanted to do was work.

During & After Formal ABI Rehab

Let’s move the into the practical realm now.

I propose a few concrete steps that survivors can take to provide themselves with the tools they need to become fully functioning again.

Let’s start with the ADL (Activity of Daily Living) of getting clean
First you need the infrastructure to make this achievable.

Second you need the supplies in order to make things work.

And third you need the effort to bring this project to completion.

Before Formal Rehab

Everyone wants to get back to where they were before the accident.

How this struggle will proceed is up to you, your caregivers, your support workers, and your health care team. But most of all, you.

First item on the agenda is to get the person back to doing their ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living)

This is the first step in a long process and a stage which I think should never really be left.
